Welcome to XX ICPC: ‘Advancing Technology Beyond Best Practice’

In October 2023, the XX International Coal Preparation Congress (ICPC) will be held on the Gold Coast, Australia; this follows two extremely successful ICPCs held in Australia in 1976 and 1998. This ICPC will also be a momentous event, and the Australian Coal Preparation Society invites practitioners from all around the world to contribute to its success.

Australia is one of the world’s leading coal exporters, providing 390 Mt/y of high quality metallurgical and steam coal to end users around the world. The thermal coal from Australia supports the optimum use of HELE technologies to produce power at significantly lower levels of green house emissions. Thus, efficient coal preparation is crucial for the success of the Australian industry, so there has been significant innovation and research in process, design and operations that can be shared with the world during the XX ICPC.

The technical program for the ICPC will include some 90 papers from Australia and nine other countries. The excellent program is wide ranging, covering sessions on ESG aspects, coarse coal processing, fine coal treatment, dewatering, dry separation, plant operations and plant design. As part of the ICPC, there is a substantial Exhibition featuring equipment, technologies and services from leading Australian and overseas companies. Delegates will not only benefit from the knowledge obtained from hearing papers and visiting the Exhibition, but also from the many networking opportunities provided within the ICPC program of technical, cultural and social events. There is also an optional visit to inspect two of Australia’s world class coking coal mines in the Bowen Basin (subject to numbers).

The venue for the Congress is the Gold Coast Conference and Exhibition Centre, located in Broadbeach. This is an excellent facility and allows for the integration of all the events with accommodation and transport. As a bonus for our international visitors, there is an opportunity to visit the beautiful Gold Coast with wonderful beaches and a fantasic array of tourist attarctions.

The organisation of the ICPC has been overviewed by the International Organising Committee (IOC), consisting of representatives from 13 different countries, and their input to the developent of the ICPC program is gratefully acknowledged. There has been huge efforts in Australia by our Local Organising Committee, in managing the orgaisational details, and the Technical Organising Committee, in developing the technical program and reviewing papers.

In welcoming delegates to the Gold Coast, the ACPS recognise the traditional owners of the land.

The ACPS has been very fortunate in attracting a significant amount of financial sponsorship, in particular from Yancoal Australia as the major sponsor, allowing delegate registration fees to be appreciably reduced.

On behalf of the Australian Coal Preparation Society, and our Local Organising Committee, we look forward to warmly welcoming you to the Gold Coast in October 2023 to participate in the XX International Coal Preparation Congress and Exhibition.
